The We are the Best project was recently accepted as one of the Canada 150 Signature Initiative Projects by the Government of Canada.

Throughout 2017, several initiatives with a nationwide reach will give Canadians the opportunity to come together and celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

A video tribute to Canadian terroir

RICARDO Media is on a mission to promote the talent of Canada’s artisans. With the We Are the Best project, a series of 52 short bilingual videos, Ricardo will show Canadians—as well as the rest of the world—the extraordinary culinary richness of our country. Our finest products, whose success is recognized both here and abroad, will be highlighted, from wild rice produced by a Saskatchewan aboriginal community to Ontario icewine, Quebec wild blueberries and Newfoundland snow crab. Fifty-two different products will be featured in this ambitious series, filmed from one end of the country to the other by Ricardo and his team.

“For a long time I’ve wanted to show Canadians the true richness of our national terroir and challenge preconceived notions. For example, I’ve often heard people say that Dijon mustard comes from France. Well, that’s partly true. In reality, most of the mustard seeds come from Saskatchewan and are exported to our French cousins… That’s the kind of story we want to tell. With this major undertaking, set to coincide with the 150th anniversary of our country, I’m finally getting a chance to celebrate our local success stories!” — Ricardo

A heightened interest in food culture is one of the defining trends of our times—one that transcends debates over language and politics. Food culture can bring Canadians together, which is precisely what Ricardo had in mind when he developed the concept for this series.

Spotlight on cultural diversity and a new generation

The series will pay tribute to the young entrepreneurs and creators—including farmers, winegrowers, artisans and chefs—who are shaping our culinary heritage now and for the future. The videos will also highlight our country’s many different landscapes and faces. The highly significant contributions of our various First Nations communities will also be featured and celebrated in the series.

“The delicious documentary series We Are the Best allows us to go in search of Canadian flavours and the best Canadian products. It will showcase the culinary and agricultural heritage of the entire country, not to mention the passionate artisans who help shape it. The 150th anniversary of Confederation is an opportunity to celebrate our culture through regional recipes. Your mouth will be watering, I promise!” — The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage

One new 3-minute video will be released each week between January 1 and December 31, 2017. All 52 videos will be produced in formats for television, the Web and social media, and will be accessible free of charge to all Canadians and available for viewing on RICARDO Media platforms as well as on our broadcasting partners’ networks.

We Are the Best is an extraordinary initiative that will make Canadians prouder than ever in 2017!

  1. What a super initiative, I applaud anything ( particularly culinary/wine) Canadian in context. Not knowing if this project is in progress or nearing completion, I would like to put forward a visit to our splendid Okanagan Valley where the food and wine culture is definitely stellar. It is focused on local, artisinal , exciting, food in a breathtaking setting. Hoping this is/will be the case.............Penticton fan!!!

  2. I concur with the above statements....really looking forward to being able to view all of these 52 videos.

  3. A truly wonderful project and educational opportunity! This will be an inspiration to us all. Thank you!

  4. An outstanding IDEA / Project----It brings us ( ALL Canadians ) together to share/ enjoy the incredible food of our wonderful country with our " Fellow Travellers " and the world without having a " Competitive Cooking show / contest " !
