8 Recipes to Warm You Up After a Day of Fun Outdoors

No need to go far to enjoy winter and have fun on the ice or in the snow. We’ve got comforting ideas for recipes that you can prepare just before you put your boots on, or that you can whip up quickly when you’re back from an afternoon of sledding.

1. Roasted Parsnip and Onion Soup

Easy to remember, this soup will become your go-to next time there are flurries and you just want to enjoy watching the falling snow from the comfort of your home. Simply caramelize the diced vegetables and purée them in the blender with broth until the mixture reaches a fairly thick consistency. All the vegetables that you have on hand can do the trick. Garnish the soup with cheddar cheese croutons and that’s happiness in a bowl!

2. Pasta with Slow Cooker Pork Stew

Leaving for a fun day in the snow? Get the slow cooker to work for you, cooking a pork shoulder long and slow. The secret of the intense flavour? Twenty-four cloves of garlic! Once cooked, this impressive quantity of garlic will give a delicious, enveloping sweetness to the meat, a bit like an onion soup. With pasta and spinach, it’s ultra comforting.

3. Oven-Baked White Beans in Broth with Soft-Boiled Eggs

After a day out in the cold air, this dish warms the body and the heart. The texture lies somewhere between soup and baked beans. The beans are tender and the broth is fragrant and aromatic, thanks to the Parmesan and lemon that give it a delightful depth. Make the dish just before you go outside and top it with a soft-boiled egg upon serving.

4. Red Wine-Braised Pork Poutine

The ultimate pleasure of a winter day? This giant poutine served family-style at the table! Cook the pork and fries successively in the oven, while the kids make snowmen outside. Top the dish with the cheese curds, cover with the red wine sauce, garnish with the peas and Parmesan shavings…and get a bunch of forks out!

5. Pull-Apart Mini Pizza Sandwiches

For a quick lunch between two snowball fights, make these mini sandwiches. Use store-bought mini brioche hamburger buns and put them all close together on a sheet pan, then spread all of the ingredients in a single layer over them so that the cheese pulls nicely. Super indulgent!

6. Pastitsio

Pastitsio is a Greek recipe comparable to lasagna with its Bolognese-type sauce and bechamel sauce, but instead of long, flat pasta, we use tubular pasta. For a successful dish, make sure that the pasta is packed down firmly. It’s even coated in egg whites in addition to the bechamel and cheese, so that everything really sticks together. A nice project to cook while the snow falls.

7. Braised Beef and Cheese Tacos (Quesabirria)

There’s no doubt that these tacos will warm up your cold, red cheeks. Found in the kitchens of Mexico and the U.S. southwest, quesabirrias are made with tortillas that you dip in the cooking juice of beef that has been braised in a fairly mild dried chili pepper sauce. Put the meat on the tortillas before frying them in a skillet. Keep the rest of the juice for dipping at the table.

8. Basque Cheesecake

Created in the Spanish Basque Country, this cake is different from other types of cheesecakes because it has no crust, only a mixture of cream cheese, sugar, eggs, cream and flour. It’s ultra-light, like a little cloud. As it requires a very long cooling time, it’ll give you the perfect opportunity to go skating in the park.
