  1. With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 200 °C (400 °F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk and butter. With your hands, combine until the dough is just blended. Do not knead. Shape a ball and place on the baking sheet.
  3. With a knife, make a deep cross incision on the bread. Brush with buttermilk and bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the centre of the bread comes out clean. Let cool for about 30 minutes. Spread with butter and serve with Beer Beef Stew or with Braised Lamb Roast with Garlic. 



Note

The bread will keep for about two days.

  3. This was my first time making soda bread. Great recipe! Very easy. I would love to know if it can be make with other types of flour.

  4. Weights should be in grams, not volume. Even the buttermilk can be expressed in grams. Measured in ml is ok but there can be variations due to parallax and measuring equipment that shows 10 ml for example may be non-existant. For example, 750ml of flour should be 380 gm. Other than that, it looks like a great recipe and I'm going to tryi it soon!

  7. A trick I have recently learned, that makes the bread even better, is to cook it in a Dutch oven, ideally cast iron. You put the pot, with lid, in the oven while it is preheating. Drop the bread in, cover and bake for 30 minutes then take the lid off and bake for 10 or 15 more minutes.
