Ingredients

Preparation

  1. With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 200 °C (400 °F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk and butter. With your hands, combine until the dough is just blended. Do not knead. Shape a ball and place on the baking sheet.
  3. With a knife, make a deep cross incision on the bread. Brush with buttermilk and bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the centre of the bread comes out clean. Let cool for about 30 minutes. Spread with butter and serve with Beer Beef Stew or with Braised Lamb Roast with Garlic.

Note

The bread will keep for about two days.

Comments

  1. Very good and so easy to make. Served it with Irish stew. Was a great success my guests loved it.

  2. Over the years, I have made many soad breads. This is, without a doubt, the best. Delicious! Thank you for yet another wonderful recipe!

  3. A trick I have recently learned, that makes the bread even better, is to cook it in a Dutch oven, ideally cast iron. You put the pot, with lid, in the oven while it is preheating. Drop the bread in, cover and bake for 30 minutes then take the lid off and bake for 10 or 15 more minutes.

  4. this is the best soda bread that I have made
