Ingredients
3 cups (750 ml) unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons (30 ml) sugar
2 teaspoons (10 ml) baking powder
1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml) salt
1 1/4 cups (310 ml) buttermilk
1/2 cup (125 ml) unsalted butter, melted
Buttermilk, for brushing
Preparation
With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 200 °C (400 °F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk and butter. With your hands, combine until the dough is just blended. Do not knead. Shape a ball and place on the baking sheet.
With a knife, make a deep cross incision on the bread. Brush with buttermilk and bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the centre of the bread comes out clean. Let cool for about 30 minutes. Spread with butter and serve with Beer Beef Stew or with Braised Lamb Roast with Garlic.
Note from Ricardo
The bread will keep for about two days.
