  1. With the rack in the middle position, preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). With softened butter, butter a 20-cm (8-inch) square baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the remaining ingredients and combine using a whisk or an electric mixer until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the baking dish.
  3. Bake the cake for about 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack in the pan. Once cooled, ice the cake or simply cut into squares and serve with strawberries and whipped cream or ice cream.

  1. UPDATE: Well, it was actually not as bad as I thought, while enormously domed, the sides were dark but not over-cooked, and the center completely cooked, and delicious! Next time I will use a larger pan?

  2. Cake came out with massive dome on top... Was it really supposed to be 1 tbsp of baking powder ??? It also took longer to cook in the center, and the sides were overcooked... :(

  3. The only change I made was reducing the sugar to 3/4 cup. I served fruit & whipped cream over it, like a shortcake. It was delicious. Baked in a 9” by 9” glass pan at 375 for 30 - 35 minutes. Very quick & easy.

  4. Maybe you need to whisk the egg whites first and slowly add the sugar, yolks one at the time, to get a fluffy mix. I just follow your recipe exactly, mix the dry ingredients, dump the liquid ones, whisk all together, bake and disaster happened LOL. I call it my disaster cake ever. A waste of time.

  5. I don’t know why it has good reviews, but the cake turned out to be a mess. Very dry outside and very thick inside.

  6. Taste good but way to much baking powder. I will use half what recipe calls for next time. Doubled the recipe. Used soy milk instead of cow. Used half sugar and half maple syrup. Baked in 9x13 glass pan 350* convection for 40 min. Tender, moist and great texture. Baking powder taste isn't so great. Will reuse this recipe when in a rush Served with chocolate sauce and kids loved it.

  7. Awful. Followed the recipe exactly the way it is and the cake has turned out hard, dry and like a solid mass inside. Wasted ingredients.

  8. Only complaint was from one of my children that it was a little dry. I baked this in a 9” circular pan and it worked fine. I am not great with cakes but found this recipe SUPER easy and the cake was perfect in fluffyness, flavor, and mouth feel. You could make a nice 2 layered cake with this. I had it with some whipped cream and coffee. It was delicious!

  9. This is an awful recipe. I don’t get the good comments. I’m quite a skilled baker and I followed the recipe exactly and even used the same size tin it said to use. After 55mins the mixture was still all gloopy on the inside. There’s also far too much batter for the size of the tin told to use. Complete waste of ingredients thanks a lot!

  10. This cake turned out great!! I used baking soda instead of powder, so I added a teaspoon of lemon juice and I substituted the milk for almond milk. Love it!!!! Wish I could add pictures!

  11. I'm sorry to say but I followed the recipe exactly and it was disastrous. I'd say I'm a pretty good cook but this cake recipe is totally faulty. I'm surprised people have liked it. Adding 1 cup of milk makes the cake so dense and even after 1 hour of baking it remained raw and claggy. I would definitely not recommend this cake. I wasted ingredients :(

  15. I love this cake it is sooo delicious and easy to make! It is also so light and fluffy but doesn’t crumble! It is also nice and sweet but not to sweet which is a good thing! I would definitely make this cake again because I love it!!!
