  1. With the rack in the middle position, preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). With softened butter, butter a 20-cm (8-inch) square baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the remaining ingredients and combine using a whisk or an electric mixer until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the baking dish.
  3. Bake the cake for about 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack in the pan. Once cooled, ice the cake or simply cut into squares and serve with strawberries and whipped cream or ice cream.

  1. Awesome cake spongy and dense. I used my bundt pan and was baked in less time as stated. Topped with cream cheese icing. Superb texture and flavor ❤❤

  2. This is my go-to basic recipe. It's easy to modify with add-ins. I add 2 tablespoons poppy seeds, 1 T lemon juice and zest of one lemon for a lemon poppy seed cake. I've used almond or rum extract, or rose water instead of vanilla. I've also used a variety of milks: soy, almond, oat, which all work. And I've replaced 1/4 of the milk with plain yogurt for a denser, tangier cake. For a lighter white cake, use just the egg whites, omitting the yolks. Fun and tasty to play around with!

  3. Sure at the begining the taste is great but the worst part is that the cake batter exploded in my oven now I have a huge mess, the outside was burnt and crusty but thn I had high hopes because I though it was some cream between the cake but it was the batter. Eww do not recommend.

  4. This cake is Amazing, it is delicious and easy to make. Although I usually add 3/4 cups of sugar and 1/4 cups of oil.

  9. AMAZING. I made the cake and it was moist, it could have been less sweet and it was more like a pound cake but I enjoyed it very much. I also made the sugar cookies in the comment below this one and they were also SOOOOO GOOD. I heated the oven to 350 which was not included in that comment. I am very thankful that both recipes were posted and I will definitely be making both of these recipes again!!!

  10. I set out to make this cake, but midway discovered this would make some great sugar cookies. I’ve been using this recipe to make soft sugar cookies since and they’re divine. Follow this recipe but add 1 egg instead of two and skip the milk. U have some cookie dough to bake into cookies now.

  12. Excellent! Im a complete novice at baking and it came out beautifully. Thank you for posting! By the way I used olive oil because i didn't have canola, or vanilla extract and I used soy milk also because that's all i had. It was lovely!

  14. i followed the recipe to the dot. It is delicious. We baked cupcakes instead of a cake - to help with the portions, It took like 18 minutes for them. Also a small loaf that cooked for about 45 minutes. All in all a super easy recipe with a small number of ingredients. I mixed everything a lot, and that is probably why it got out so good. Would be better if it was moist, but the whipped cream helps. My family loved it. And it only took like an hour.

  15. It's a very heavy bread like cake.. it's missing something for moisture, I'm thinking it needs another egg, very dense. But gonna eat it, so my ingredients are not wasted. Missing something.
