In a pot, bring the alcohol, juice, sugar and spices to a boil. Simmer until the mixture is syrupy, about 10 minutes. Add the cherries and simmer for another 2 minutes. Transfer into a bowl and cool completely. Compost the cinnamon stick and star anise. Set the syrup aside.
