Staff-Approved Spots to Enjoy a Smash Burger

Here at RICARDO, we love smash burgers, whose meat patties are pressed until juicy and caramelized, and can be enjoyed in snack bars, as well as more and more in specialty restaurants. We asked members of our team to share their favourite places to eat one.

1. Patty Slaps

“Having tasted a large number of smash burgers, I can say that, in my opinion, Patty Slaps in Montreal is the best. I find their meat and products are all high in quality. Their wrapping ensures that the food always arrives at your door hot (and still looks as good as in their photos). These are real smash burgers; perfectly crispy and not at all dry. They have six choices of burgers on the menu and the toppings have been well thought out. Special mention for their sauces (truffle mayo, aioli) that are addictive and their fries made in house are really tasty!”

2. Chez Simon Cantine urbaine

Chez Simon Cantine Urbaine opened its doors during the pandemic in the Tétreaultville neighbourhood, on Montreal’s east side. Its popularity hasn’t waned since, and the establishment now has locations in Laplaine, Longueuil and in downtown’s Time Out Market. It sells canteen food inspired by the American Southwest, like chili cheese fries, loaded hot dogs and, of course, smash burgers. It’s one of the best burgers I’ve eaten in my life. It includes a soft meat patty, melty cheese and a perfectly seasoned mayonnaise.”

La Patate Rit is a new snack bar with a retro feel in Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu. I went in for a traditional smash burger and a good poutine, and I wasn’t disappointed!”

4. Mange dans mon hood

“I love this restaurant with its distinct personality that’s located in a basement on Montreal’s Jean-Talon Street. I love it so much, I even bought a t-shirt. The burger buns are perfectly soft, the meat is caramelized and well seasoned, and the burgers are loaded with sauce! It’s everything you want in a smash burger.”

5. Double’s

“Chef Danny Smiles is co-owner of this restaurant that has a dive bar feel. The burgers are available until 2 a.m. at all times. Boasting quality ingredients, the burgers are extremely juicy…and the extra crispy bacon is always available!”
