  1. With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F).
  2. In a bowl, combine the meat, onion, garlic, and spices. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Crumble half the meat mixture into a 33 x 23-cm (13 x 9-inch) baking dish. Sprinkle with half the rice and cover with half the tomatoes. Layer with half the cabbage and press gently. Add the remaining meat and rice in the same way. Cover with the remaining tomatoes. Layer with the remaining cabbage. Season with salt and pepper. Add the broth. Cover with a sheet of aluminum foil. Bake for 2 hours. Remove the foil and bake for 30 minutes.


  1. Delicious and simple - a deconstructed cabbage roll! Next time, I will reduce the amount of broth by 1/4 cup and the total time by 20-30 minutes.

  2. Delicious. So much flavour. Easy to put together and it makes a large amount. Will definitely make this again. Loved that you didn't have to brown the meat first.

  3. Excellent taste, easy & quick to put together. Half a medium sized cabbage yielded 8 Cups, sliced 3/8" thick. The top cabbage pieces charred just a little bit which added that "roasted" flavour perfectly. Economical meal in our Canadian fall season: $0.50 for half a head of cabbage, $1.00 one can of tomatoes. This dish costs me a max of $6.00 to make=$1.00/serving! Great job Ricardo team!
