5 Comforting, Gourmet Recipes Made from Canned Goods

Somewhere between a bag of flour and a box of cereal, you’ll probably find a few canned goods. Before they start getting dusty, set out on a quest through your pantry, searching for these timesaving, affordable ingredients that can be used as a base for comforting gourmet dishes.

1. Coconut-Curry Cauliflower Soup

Make this recipe with cauliflower softened in broth with coconut milk and lentils. Enhance the preparation with a good dose of curry powder that gives it a golden colour and intense flavour. As a final touch, garnish each bowl with a mixture of diced apples and a sprinkle of cilantro leaves. Serve this delicious soup with naan bread.

2. Fried Olives with Spicy Antipasto Mayonnaise

Why go out to the restaurant if you can enjoy cocktail hour at home just by going through the contents of your pantry? All you need for this recipe is a jar of olives. Coat them in batter made with beer—and why not serve beer to drink as well? Serve the fried olives with a dip combining mayo and a store-bought antipasto spread. Perfect to satisfy the munchies before dinner.

3. Tuna Noodle Casserole

With this recipe, use your canned tuna fish in another way than sandwiches and transform it into a gourmet casserole. Add green peas and egg noodles to a thick sauce made using another canned food that you’ll often find in your pantry: cream of mushroom soup. Garnish this ultra velvety dish with a mixture of panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan for a tasty little extra crunch.

4. Celeriac Remoulade and Salmon Gravlax Toasts

You’re in the habit of purchasing fresh celeriac, but as with several other vegetables, it can also be bought in canned form. Find it already grated and still crunchy, making things easier when preparing remoulade with mayo, sour cream and mustard. Use the remoulade to garnish pieces of toast slathered with cream cheese. Cover this open-faced sandwich with store-bought salmon gravlax to evoke the taste of smoked salmon bagels.

5. Braised Cabbage with White Beans

Convenient canned legumes occupy a select place in your pantry. As it’s not necessary to soak them in advance, they make things easier for us. This recipe calls for white cannellini beans that you can replace with classic white beans if that’s what you have in your cupboard. Serve this braised cabbage dish with persillade croutons. A comforting vegetarian dish just as you like them.
