How to Store and Serve Cheese

How can you avoid serving a sharp cheddar that barely tastes of anything because it’s too cold, or an overly soft brie that’s been sitting on the counter for too long? Here are a few tips on how to store your cheeses appropriately so you can enjoy them at their best and at the peak of their flavour.

Good to Know

Cheese is at its best at the moment you purchase it. So we suggest buying only what you need to eat it quickly and fully enjoy its freshness.

Cheesemongers recommend leaving cheeses in their original packaging or keeping them in parchment paper wrapped in aluminum foil. This way, cheeses continue to breathe. Plastic wrap is not recommended because it creates a humid environment that can even give cheese a plasticky taste. Lastly, leave the crusts on because your cheeses will keep longer.

Storing Cheese

In the fridge, in the vegetable crisper. Well wrapped, cheese can keep for many weeks, even up to a month in the case of firm cheeses, such as Parmesan that you can grate over pasta. In the case of fresh cheeses, such as burrata, they can keep for about two weeks.

Serving Cheese

To savour cheeses at their peak, with their subtle and complex notes, the best serving temperature to fully appreciate them is around 15°C. We suggest you leave them out to reach room temperature for about an hour before eating them. For example, if you plan to serve a cheese tray at the end of dinner, take it out of the fridge when you first sit down at the table.

Note: Grated cheese freezes very well. You don’t even need to defrost it before using it in cooked dishes, such as quesadillas or vegetable muffins.
