How to Boil Eggs Perfectly

Boiling eggs to perfection is all about timing! Whether you prefer soft-boiled eggs in the shell, perfectly runny yolks or your centres firm and fully cooked, this article shares with you the right techniques for consistent results each and every time.

1. Soft-boiled eggs in the shell

This type of runny egg with a firm white is a hit with kids and perfect for dipping!

1. In a pot of simmering water, carefully submerge a room-temperature egg.
2. Count three minutes, then remove the egg from the water.
3. Cool the egg under cold running water for one minute
4. Remove the tip of the egg.

2. Soft-boiled eggs

With a thick yet runny yolk, this type of boiled egg is wonderful on salads, poutine, power bowls and ramen.

1. In a pot of simmering water, carefully submerge a room-temperature egg.
2. Count six minutes, then remove the egg from the water.
3. Cool the egg under cold running water for one minute
4. Peel the egg.

What about jammy eggs?

You’ve likely heard of jammy eggs before. Here, the yolk is thicker than that of a soft-boiled egg; it’s a bit creamy with a spreadable texture. To achieve this, cook your egg for one minute more than you would a soft-boiled egg.

3. Hard-boiled eggs

A perfectly hard-boiled egg is a great source of protein for salads and sandwiches.

1. In a pot of simmering water, carefully submerge a room-temperature egg.
2. Count 10 minutes, then remove the egg from the water.
3. Cool the egg under cold running water for one minute
4. Peel the egg.
