What’s the Difference Between a Cupcake and a Muffin?

Cupcakes and muffins can often be mistaken for each other, but they’re a little different. Here’s how!

The cupcake

It’s always covered with a frosting, either a buttercream, ganache or whipped cream, and often with a topping such as candies or fruit. It is more defined as a cake and special care is taken with its decoration and appearance.

The muffin

It’s enjoyed without icing and has a healthier reputation, even if that’s not always the case. Sometimes it can have a topping, such as a crumble, nuts or dried fruit.

Finally, muffins are usually eaten for breakfast or as a snack, whereas cupcakes are more often served for dessert or offered at festive events.
