10 Must-Try Recipes Featuring Chickpeas

Whether canned or dried and then cooked, chickpeas are among our favourite foods for simple, affordable and sometimes meatless meals. They’re also good for you, making them an essential ingredient to always keep handy in the pantry. We know they already taste great in hummus, but we’ve got even more tasty ideas, like soups, stews, tacos and everything in between.

1. Hummus

Hummus, the popular Middle Eastern spread, is one of the more well-known vehicles for the humble chickpea. Blended with tahini, lemon juice and garlic, it’s ideal for dipping pita chips or raw veggies. And, yes, if you’re allergic to sesame, tahini-free versions do exist.

2. Chickpea and Pasta Soup

Looking for a vegetarian meal idea to whip up on a busy weeknight? This rustic Italian-inspired chickpea and pasta soup (known as pasta e ceci) is cheap and easy to make, satiating and oh-so comforting

3. Chicken with Chickpeas and Crispy Pita (Fatteh)

Fatteh is a crispy pita recipe with layers of perfectly spiced chicken and chickpeas and a garlicky yogurt sauce. With a sprinkling of mint for a touch of freshness and pomegranate seeds that pop in your mouth, this recipe is like an elevated, Middle Eastern version of loaded nachos!

4. Warm Bulgur, Chickpea and Broccoli Salad

Chickpeas are a great addition to salads, as they provide a much needed dose of protein. They can be used in a kale salad, rice salad, pasta salad and more, but we particularly like them in a warm bulgur salad with bell peppers and broccoli florets. Delicious!

5. Air Fryer Roasted Chickpea Tacos

Chickpeas roasted to perfection in the air fryer: what convenience! They make the perfect protein for a meatless taco. The crunchy legumes, paired with soft tortillas and delicious garnishes, make this meal a wonderful contrast of flavours and textures.

6. Deconstructed Samosas with Chickpea Curry

Samosa chaat is a popular Indian street food, and it’s absolutely easy to put together on a busy weeknight. The dish includes a flavourful chickpea curry, fresh garnishes, and you can use frozen samosas from the grocery store or even pick up a few from your favourite nearby Indian restaurant!

7. Beef and Chickpea Stew

A great way to save money is to swap half the meat in a recipe with a plant-based protein. For example, chickpeas make a great addition to this slow cooker beef stew bursting with North African flavours. It’s also loaded with veggies and includes apricots for a touch of sweetness.

8. Vegetarian Savoury Pie with Chickpeas and Mushrooms

Love a hearty chicken pot pie or meat pie during the holidays but want to occasionally forgo the meat? Chickpeas are a great alternative, used in this recipe along with meaty mushrooms and warming spices to create a festive dish the whole family can enjoy.

9. Crunchy Maple Cinnamon Chickpeas

Perfectly snackable, roasted chickpeas make a great movie night snack, and are a more healthful alternative to a bag of chips. They can be tossed with your seasonings of choice (in this instance, we had a hankering for the sweet taste of maple-cinnamon) and then baked in the oven until crunchy.
