6 Ways to Enjoy Fish and Seafood on a Budget

Want to indulge in delicious fish and seafood, but don’t have the budget for it? Don’t worry, there are a few ways to enjoy the best of the ocean without feeling like you’re adrift at sea without a paddle! Follow these mindful tips on how to save money regularly, allowing you to splurge occasionally when crab or lobster seasons come around.

1. Opt for canned

Canned tuna: It goes beyond your basic tuna salad or tuna noodle casserole. It is such a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed on a tostada, in a pasta dish and more. Other canned options include crabmeat, mackerel and sardines, which are all tasty, affordable and good-for-you choices.

2. Shop frozen

Fresh is best. However, to save some money, you can usually find the likes of salmon, cod and halibut fillets in the freezer section of the grocery store. What’s even better, they’re usually sustainable, wild caught and of great quality!

3. Buy small amounts and get creative with other ingredients

A small amount of fish and seafood can go a long way! For example, clam chowder is often loaded with ingredients like potatoes, bacon and sometimes other vegetables, so you don’t require too many clams. The same goes for a hearty seafood salad that includes a whole bunch of other ingredients to fill you up.

4. Imitation is an option

There’s a time and a place for fresh crab; after all, it’s simply irresistible! But in certain recipes, you can get away with using imitation crab. It’s particularly used in sushi. We don’t recommend eating imitation crab too often, though; it is a highly processed fish consisting of pieces of pollock and a slew of additives.

5. Try a less expensive fish

While you may enjoy salmon often, it isn’t always wallet friendly unless it’s on sale. So think outside the box and try a different fish that’s more affordable, such as trout. There’s also sea bream, which is a tasty, healthy and nutrient-rich option that’s worth cooking with.

6. Use the whole fish or crustacean

If you buy a whole fish and have consumed the flesh, be sure to save the head and bones to make a delicious fish stock. And if, come lobster season, you buy a couple to make your usual lobster rolls, the carcasses will come in handy to make a wonderful lobster bisque or lobster oil! After all, less waste means more money in your pocket.
